The Sovereign: the cardigan I made in my hardest year, now free

The Sovereign was the first cardigan I ever made. I didn’t know how to knit a cardigan yet. I learned by making this one, in the hardest year of my life.
A year in and out of hospital
That year I was in and out of hospital. Three surgeries. There's a particular kind of waiting that comes with that: the waiting before, the waiting during recovery, the waiting to feel like yourself again. I needed somewhere to put my hands and my head at the same time, and knitting turned out to be it.
Chunky wool on 12mm needles is slow. A row takes minutes, not seconds, and you feel every stitch land. That slowness was the point. Sitting with a needle that size, working rows this deliberate, gave me a place to put feelings about life, death and my own mortality that I genuinely didn’t have anywhere else to put. I wasn’t decorating a jumper. I was getting through a year, one row at a time.
I wasn’t trying to start a business, either. I was trying to get through a year. But that’s the year Gigante Knits started. This cardigan isn’t a nice origin story I tell afterwards to make the brand sound better. It's the actual thing that happened.
The cardigan that became a person
By the time it was finished, it had opinions of its own. Cream speckle body, deep red trim, and the seams mattress-stitched from the right side on purpose, worn on the outside, because the seam itself is the decoration, not something to hide. A ladder of hand-worked crosses runs down the back, hem to neck. I call it the Sovereign X. The cuffs have their own ladder bars, unevenly spaced, a small deliberate imperfection I never bothered to fix because it looked like it belonged there.
People stop me in supermarkets and pubs asking where I got it. They still do, years on. It’s called The Sovereign because more than one stranger, unprompted, has told me I look like a king wearing it. Not a compliment I was fishing for. Just what people say when they see it.
It’s the piece that started a business, and it’s still the one that gets me stopped in the cereal aisle.
Why I’m giving it away
I’ve thought about this pattern as a product for a while and never quite wanted to sell it. It's too tied up in that year to price like the others. But keeping it to myself felt wrong too, especially with how many of you have stopped me in comments, in emails, in the odd customer photo, to ask where the design came from in the first place.
So here it is, given away rather than sold. It's my way of saying thank you to everyone who's bought a pattern, ordered a kit, joined the newsletter, or just told a friend about us along the way. You don't need to have bought anything before to claim it. You just need to want it.
