Meet Kit, the Knitting Companion Who Lives on Our Website

Most of the questions that land in my inbox arrive late in the evening. A sleeve that looks wider than the photo. A dropped stitch five rows back. “I'm 96 cm round the chest, which size?” They're good questions, and they deserve an answer right then, while the needles are still in your hands, not the next morning when I've had coffee.

So we built Kit.

What Kit is

Kit is an AI knitting companion that lives in the corner of giganteknits.com and in the app. It has read every one of our patterns, knows every shade of wool we spin and every post in this journal, and it uses the same size tables and wool calculator the kit pages use, so the numbers it gives you are the numbers I'd give you.

Ask it in Portuguese, it answers in Portuguese. Ask it in Finnish, Finnish. All twenty-two languages the site speaks.

Send a photoKit looks at the knitting and tells you what went wrong and the way back. Size and woolYour measurement in, your size and grams out, from our own tables. Colours and kitsWhich kit, which three shades, what suits what.

What Kit won't do

Kit helps with the pattern. Kit is not the pattern. It will never read you the rows or the decrease schedule, so the written pattern stays where it belongs, on the pattern page. What it does is explain, check your numbers, suggest and encourage, the way a friend who knits would.

And when Kit isn't sure, it says so and points you to me. No bluffing. I'd rather it said “ask Fernando” than guessed.

Why a ball of yarn

Kit went through a few faces before this one. A rounded square with a V on top looked like a television. A stitch on a needle looked like a map pin. The lilac ball with the little tuft was the first one that looked like something you'd find at the bottom of a knitting bag, and that was the point: a companion, not a robot.

“Well, hello! I'm Kit, here for all things Gigante. Knitting questions, woolly dilemmas, or just a bit of inspiration? I've got you.”

How to try it

Make a free account and Kit will answer three questions on the house. Premium members get Kit all day, every day, with their own orders and saved designs in view, alongside every pattern, the Design Studio, 10% off the shop and a Cardigan Refresh once a year.

Look for the lilac ball at the bottom of the homepage, or the question mark in the top corner on any page. Say hello. Kit will wave back.

Happy knitting, Fernando
