The Real Difference Between a Knitting Kit and a Handknit Cardigan (It Isn’t Just the Price)
Before you spend a penny, there’s one fork in the road to sort out: do you make it yourself, or do we make it for you? It’s a fair question, and there isn’t one right way in. There are three, and the best one depends entirely on what you actually want out of it.
So let me lay them out plainly, the way I’d explain it to a friend over a cup of tea. No upselling, no “this one’s clearly better”, because they’re genuinely different experiences, and the trick is matching the path to the person.
Path one: a knitting kit (you knit it, we send everything)
A kit is the whole bundle in a single box: the pre-prepped wool in your chosen colours, the big wooden needles, and the matching step-by-step pattern. You open it up, and everything you need to make the cardigan is already there. Nothing to source, nothing to second-guess. There’s a full rundown in what’s in a chunky cardigan kit.
This is the one I quietly recommend most often, because it gives you the bit people are really after, the making, without any of the homework. You don’t have to work out how much wool to buy, or which needle size, or whether the colours will play nicely together. We’ve done that part. You just get to sit down and knit.
A kit hands you the experience of making, with none of the maths and guesswork beforehand.
In its favour: everything matches and arrives together, it’s the kindest route for beginners, and the chunky stitches grow so fast that you see real progress in an evening. The catch: you do still have to knit it (this is a project, not a parcel) and you’re working within the colours and design we’ve packed. If you’re a total newcomer, my guide for complete beginners will tell you plainly whether it’s within reach. It is; chunky is the gentlest place to start.
It suits anyone who wants the calm, rewarding ritual of knitting but would rather not spend an afternoon comparing wool weights and needle sizes online first.
Path two: the pattern only (you’ve already got the wool)
If you’re a knitter who already has a stash and a tin of needles, you may not want a whole box of new wool. In that case, just take the pattern. It’s the same clear, step-by-step PDF that comes in the kit, with the chart, the construction notes and the finishing, only without the materials.
This is the leanest, most economical route, and it’s lovely if you like choosing your own wool. The one thing I’d flag: chunky knitting really does want chunky materials. If your stash is mostly fine yarn, the cardigan won’t look or feel the way it’s meant to, so it’s worth checking your wool weight before you cast on. Our how-much-yarn guide walks through exactly what to buy and how much, by size.
In its favour: it’s the most affordable way in, with total freedom over your colours and materials. The catch: you have to source the right wool yourself, and getting the weight and quantity right is on you, which is precisely the part a kit removes.
It suits confident knitters with a stash, or anyone who enjoys the hunt for the perfect wool as much as the knitting itself. Feeling ambitious? You can even shape your own colour story before you start; that’s what designing your own cardigan is for.
Path three: hand-knit for you (we make it by hand)
And then there’s the route for people who love the idea of a giant chunky cardigan but have no intention of picking up a needle, and that’s completely fine. We’ll knit one for you, by hand, in your size and colours.
I want to be straight with you about this one, because it’s genuinely special and I’d hate to oversell it. Every hand-knit piece is made by real people, one cardigan at a time, and there are only so many hours in a month. We can take on roughly four of these a month, no more. So it’s never the quick, easy default; it’s the slow, limited, made-just-for-you option. There’s a wait, sometimes a meaningful one, and it costs more than a kit because you’re paying for many hours of someone’s hands rather than a box of materials.
In its favour: a one-of-a-kind, made-for-you cardigan with zero knitting required, the same wool and design, finished for you. The catch: it’s the priciest path, it takes the longest, and places are strictly limited because we simply can’t make many. If a slot isn’t open when you ask, that’s the reality of handmade, not a sales tactic.
It suits someone who wants the finished piece and the story behind it, perhaps as a once-in-a-while treat or a gift, and is happy to wait for something made entirely by hand.
So which one is “right”?
If you want to make something and would rather skip the prep, take a kit. If you’re already a knitter with wool to hand, take the pattern. And if you want the cardigan without the knitting (and don’t mind waiting for one of our few monthly slots) let us hand-knit it for you.
None of them is the “serious knitter’s” option or the “easy way out.” They’re just three ways into the same warm, oversized result. Pick the one that fits your hands, your time and your patience, and you’ll end up in exactly the right place.
Still weighing it up? That’s normal; there’s no wrong choice here, only the one that suits you best. Read a little, picture yourself doing it, and the right door tends to become obvious.
